Fix Fuzzy Skin: Rough Walls, Ringing and Vertical Texture

Work out whether a rough, textured surface comes from moisture, vibration, heat or a clog before you start swapping parts.

Quick diagnosis

Fuzzy skin shows up as a hairy, matte or rippled texture on vertical walls even though the layers underneath are still fully bonded. If the walls also crack, split or peel apart along the layer lines instead of just looking rough, that is a layer-adhesion problem, not this one.

1. Rule out the slicer’s Fuzzy Skin setting

Before touching any hardware, open the profile and confirm the Fuzzy Skin or textured surface option is switched off. This feature deliberately resamples each perimeter and shifts it in and out by a random amount, producing the same hairy look on purpose. Checking it costs nothing and rules out an entire branch of causes in one step. If the setting was already off, or turning it off changes nothing, move on to the material and mechanical causes below.

2. Check the filament for moisture

Wet filament is one of the most common causes of an unwanted rough or fuzzy surface. Trapped water turns to steam inside the hot end, and the escaping gas disrupts each line as it is laid down, leaving a pitted or fibrous texture instead of a smooth wall. Nylon, PETG and TPU pick up moisture fastest, but any material left unsealed for weeks can absorb enough to affect the surface. Dry the spool in a filament dryer or an oven cycle rated for the material before ruling out anything else, then store it sealed with desiccant.

3. Look for ringing caused by vibration

If the texture takes the form of regular waves trailing away from corners rather than an even hairy coating, ringing is a more likely cause than moisture. Loose belts, a loose frame joint or resonance at a particular print speed can all make the nozzle oscillate slightly as it changes direction, and that oscillation gets printed straight into the wall. Check belt tension on the X and Y axes and tighten any loose frame bolts. Lowering print speed or acceleration on the affected model is a quick way to confirm vibration is the source before adjusting anything permanently.

4. Lower the temperature and check cooling

Printing hotter than the material needs increases oozing between lines, which can read as a rough or blobby surface rather than clean walls. Drop the temperature in small steps within the range recommended for the filament and reprint a test wall at each setting. Cooling matters too: weak fan airflow lets each line stay soft long enough for the next pass to disturb it, while a fan aimed unevenly can leave one side of a part smooth and the other rough.

5. Inspect for a partial clog or inconsistent flow

An intermittent restriction in the nozzle or a worn extruder gear can starve the print of a steady stream of filament, and the resulting stop-start flow shows up as an inconsistent, textured surface rather than a smooth one. Extrude slowly in free air and watch for a strand that thins, stutters or curls unevenly. If flow looks inconsistent, follow the printer maker’s cleaning procedure before assuming the surface issue is purely a settings problem.

  • Filament has been dried and is stored with desiccant.
  • Belts are tensioned and frame bolts are tight.
  • Temperature is at the low end of the material’s range.
  • Cooling fan airflow is even on all sides.
  • Slow manual extrusion is smooth and consistent.

If the wall issue turns out to be a real crack rather than a surface texture, it’s more likely layer separation than fuzzy skin. Moisture is also a leading cause of wet filament symptoms beyond just a rough wall.
