Your First 3D Print: A Beginner Checklist

Prepare the printer, load PLA, slice a small model and read the first layer without changing a dozen settings at once.

Goal

Produce one small PLA model while learning what a healthy first layer looks like. Use the printer manufacturer’s setup guide for assembly and machine-specific checks.

1. Inspect the printer before power-on

  • Remove shipping blocks, ties and packing material identified by the manual.
  • Make sure the build plate is seated and the nozzle area is clear.
  • Route the power and motion cables so they cannot snag.
  • Confirm the voltage selector, if present, matches the local supply. If unsure, stop and contact the seller or a qualified person.

2. Start with ordinary PLA

Use a known spool of 1.75 mm PLA if that is the diameter specified by the printer. Avoid flexible, wood-filled, glow or abrasive filament for the first test because each introduces another variable.

3. Load the filament

Heat the nozzle using the printer’s PLA loading routine. Cut a clean filament tip, release the extruder as instructed and feed until the printer can extrude a continuous strand. Keep hands away from the hotend and remove purged plastic with a tool only after it is clear of moving parts.

4. Run the printer’s leveling process

“Automatic leveling” measures the bed; it does not always set the final nozzle gap. Follow the manual’s homing, mesh and Z-offset sequence. A useful first layer is gently flattened, continuous and joined to its neighboring lines.

5. Slice a small test model

Select the exact printer, 0.4 mm nozzle if fitted and a generic or manufacturer PLA profile. For the first attempt, keep the profile defaults. A 0.20 mm layer height and modest-size model make the result easy to inspect.

6. Watch the entire first layer

What you see Likely meaning Next action
Round loose lines or gaps Nozzle too high, dirty plate or unsuitable temperature Stop and use the first-layer guide
Rough transparent smear or nozzle dragging Nozzle too low Increase the gap in a small supported step
Continuous slightly flattened lines Good initial contact Let the print continue

7. Let the plate cool before removal

Many parts release as the plate cools. Flex a removable sheet only as its manufacturer allows. Do not drive a sharp scraper toward your hand or pry against delicate coatings.

First-print checklist

  • The exact printer and nozzle profile is selected.
  • PLA is loaded and extrudes smoothly.
  • The current bed mesh and Z offset are saved.
  • The first layer is continuous and gently flattened.
  • The part cools before removal.
  • The working profile is saved before further tuning.
