Fix Resin Print Layer Lines: Misalignment, Not Ordinary Texture

Work out whether visible resin layer lines come from a wobbly Z axis, changed settings mid-print, or a shaky foundation.

Quick diagnosis

Every resin print shows faint natural layer lines from its slice height, and no amount of tuning removes those completely. This guide is about a different problem: conspicuous, uneven lines or bands that come from one layer sitting slightly out of alignment with the next. 1. Check whether the spacing is fixed or random

Measure the distance between visible lines at a few points on the print. A spacing that repeats at a consistent interval all the way up the part points to a mechanical Z-axis problem. Lines that appear at irregular heights, or only around certain features, point instead to a settings or foundation cause. Sorting this out first saves time chasing the wrong fix.

2. Inspect the Z axis for wobble

A bent or dirty Z-axis threaded rod lets the build plate shift slightly from side to side as it moves, and that shows up as banding that repeats at a fixed height. Roll the rod across a flat surface and look for any visible wobble; a rod that does not roll true should be cleaned, lubricated or replaced. Keep the rod running as straight and clean as possible, since dust and dried resin residue on the thread can disrupt smooth movement even when the rod itself is not bent.

3. Keep exposure and lift settings consistent

Changing exposure time or lift speed partway through a print, including switching between a base/support profile and the model body, changes the mechanical stress each layer has to withstand and can leave a visible line where the change happened. Once printing has moved into the model itself, avoid adjusting these settings, and be cautious with slicer features that allow different exposure zones across a single model unless the geometry genuinely needs it. Start from a tested profile for the resin and light source rather than mixing values from different sources.

4. Do not pause the print

Stopping a resin print mid-job interrupts the steady shrinkage the cured resin is already undergoing, and resuming afterward can leave a visible seam where the interrupted layer sits differently from the ones printed before and after the pause. Plan around power outages and avoid manual pauses where possible, and treat any print that had to be paused as a likely candidate for a line at that exact height.

5. Strengthen the foundation and check the resin itself

A part that is not firmly anchored can shift by a fraction of a millimeter with every layer separation from the FEP film, and that repeated micro-shift shows up as misalignment lines. Increase support density and thickness under overhangs and thin sections, and avoid abrupt transitions from hollow to solid or from a small to a large cross-section, since those transitions change how much resin has to cure and shrink from one layer to the next. Separately, confirm the resin in the tray has not been disturbed: freshly topped-up or freshly stirred resin, pigment that has settled after sitting unshaken, or a chamber heater blowing directly on the vat can all introduce inconsistency that reads as layer lines rather than a foundation problem.

  • Exposure and lift settings are unchanged once printing reaches the model body.
  • The print was not paused mid-job.
  • Supports are dense enough to anchor overhangs and thin sections.
  • Resin was shaken before use and not disturbed mid-print.
