Fix the Z-Seam: Seam Position, Coasting and Painted Seams

Hide the vertical seam line with seam position, coasting and wipe settings, or paint it manually where it matters most.

Why it matters

Every perimeter loop has to start and stop somewhere, and that transition point is the z-seam. Left on its default setting, the seam can wander around the model or land on the most visible face, and it collects more retraction and pressure changes than the rest of the wall, which is also why it is a common spot for a stray blob. None of this is a defect to fix once; it is a setting to choose deliberately for each model.

1. Pick a seam position strategy

Most slicers offer a handful of seam alignment options: aligned/nearest (stacks the seam at the closest point to the previous one), rear, sharpest corner, and random. “Sharpest corner” or a similar option that favors natural edges tends to hide the seam best on models with defined corners, since a small ridge blends into an edge the eye already expects. Random scatters the seam so no single line is visible, at the cost of a faint mark in many places instead of one visible line in a single place. Choose based on the model’s geometry rather than defaulting to whichever option the slicer ships with.

2. Pair seam position with coasting

Coasting stops active extrusion a short distance before the end of a line, letting built-up pressure finish the line instead of dumping extra material right at the seam. A small coasting distance, on the order of a few tenths of a millimeter, is a reasonable starting point; too much creates a gap or under-extruded patch at the seam instead of a blob. 3. Add a wipe on retract

A wipe move drags the nozzle a short distance along the wall as it retracts, spreading any residual ooze along the surface instead of leaving it as a raised dot at one exact point. Combined with coasting, this is usually enough to make the seam a faint line rather than a row of small blobs stacked on top of each other.

4. Use seam painting for models with a defined back

Slicers with a seam painting tool, including PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer, let you manually mark seam-enforce or seam-block zones directly on the model. This is the most precise option for a model with an obvious hidden face, such as the back of a wall-mounted piece or the underside of a display stand, since it overrides the automatic position entirely for that region.

5. Retest per filament and model

Coasting distance, wipe length and how visible a given seam position ends up being all vary somewhat by filament and by the specific model’s geometry. Treat the combination as a starting profile to adjust in small steps rather than a fixed setting to copy across every project, especially when switching to a new material or a model with very different wall geometry than what the profile was tuned on.
