Why order matters
Flow cannot repair a loose belt, and retraction cannot dry wet filament. Establish a stable machine and first layer before tuning appearance.
1. Use a known baseline
Update nothing during the calibration session unless the printer manufacturer requires it. Select the exact printer, nozzle and ordinary PLA profile. Save a copy of that profile so every test can return to the same baseline.
2. Inspect the motion system
With power off and the printer cool, check the user-serviceable items identified in the manual: plate seating, obvious wheel play, belt damage, cable routing and loose toolhead parts. Do not guess at belt tension or disassemble safety covers.
3. Build or refresh the bed mesh
Clean the cool plate, heat it if the manufacturer’s procedure requires it, and run the normal mesh routine. A mesh compensates for small height variation; it cannot fix a rocking plate, loose gantry or severely warped component.
4. Set the Z offset with a printed test
Paper is useful for an initial safe gap, but the printed line is the final evidence. Use a single-layer patch and move in small supported increments, often 0.02 mm. Stop when neighboring lines meet without ridges, scraping or translucent over-squish.
5. Tune material temperature
Use the filament maker’s range and a temperature tower suited to your slicer. Evaluate layer bonding, overhangs and surface finish together. The lowest stringing temperature is not useful if layers separate.
6. Check extrusion consistency before changing flow
Make sure the nozzle is clear, the spool turns freely and the extruder does not click. Then use a repeatable thin-wall or manufacturer-supported flow method. Change the multiplier modestly; large corrections usually indicate another problem.
7. Tune retraction and pressure behavior last
Use the printer profile’s tested range. Change temperature, retraction distance, retraction speed or pressure advance one at a time. Compare the same seams and travels on every sample.
Calibration checklist
- Mechanical checks completed with the printer cool and unpowered.
- Clean plate and current bed mesh.
- Z offset verified by a printed first layer.
- Material temperature tested within its documented range.
- Extrusion path stable before flow adjustment.
- Each result recorded against the baseline profile.
