Quick diagnosis
Layer separation is a clean crack along a single layer line, sometimes appearing minutes or hours after the print finishes as internal stress releases. This is different from warping, which lifts corners while the print is still running, and from under-extrusion, which leaves thin gaps rather than a full split.
1. Raise the hotend temperature within range
Delamination is mostly a bonding problem: each new layer needs enough heat to partially remelt the layer beneath it. Print near the top of the material’s documented temperature range rather than the middle, and run a temperature tower if the slicer supports one. A hotend that reads on target but sits at the cool end of the usable range can still leave layers too cold to fuse properly. Increase in small steps and watch for stringing or oozing, which mark the ceiling for that filament.
2. Ease off the part cooling fan
Aggressive cooling works against layer bonding by pulling heat out of the top surface before the next layer has a chance to weld to it. For PLA, try dropping the fan a step or two rather than cutting it entirely. For ABS, ASA and similar materials, keep cooling low or off and rely on an enclosure to hold ambient heat instead. If a model needs strong cooling for overhangs and bridges, limit that setting to the layers that actually need it and keep cooling lower on solid walls, where bonding matters most.
3. Slow the print down
Print speed limits how long a layer stays warm enough to fuse with the one before it. A fast outer wall or infill pass can finish before the previous layer has softened again. Slow down on tall, thin or heavily loaded parts, and check whether the slicer applies a different speed to the first few layers than to the rest of the print, since a mismatch here can leave some layers bonded well and others bonded poorly within the same object.
4. Reduce drafts and manage ambient temperature
A cold room or an open window near the printer pulls heat away unevenly, and the side of a print facing the draft can bond worse than the side that does not. Close doors and windows during a print, and for materials prone to warping and delamination, add or use an enclosure to keep ambient temperature stable. This matters most on tall prints, where the top layers being extruded are furthest from the heated bed and most exposed to surrounding air movement.
5. Check filament condition
Filament that has absorbed moisture pops and bubbles as it melts, because trapped water turns to steam at nozzle temperature and disrupts consistent bonding between layers. This shows up most with PETG, nylon and other moisture-sensitive materials, but it can happen with PLA that has sat unsealed for a long time too. Dry suspect filament following the material supplier’s guidance before printing, and store spools in a sealed container with desiccant between uses.

- Hotend temperature sits near the top of the material’s range.
- Part cooling fan is reduced to suit the material in use.
- Print speed matches the part’s height and geometry.
- The room is free of drafts, or an enclosure is in use.
- Filament has been dried or stored properly before printing.
A rough but still-bonded wall is usually fuzzy skin, not a crack along a layer line. Corners lifting during the first few layers point to warping instead.
