Under-Extrusion vs Over-Extrusion: Telling Them Apart Before You Touch the Flow Rate

Under-extrusion and over-extrusion can look confusingly similar on a print’s surface, but they come from flow moving in opposite directions, and fixing one when the print actually shows the other makes the problem worse.

Under-extrusion and over-extrusion sit at opposite ends of the same problem: the printer pushing out less filament than the slicer asked for, or more. That makes them sound easy to tell apart, and most of the time they are, but a few symptoms overlap enough to send someone adjusting the wrong dial. Nudge the extrusion multiplier in the wrong direction because a rough surface got misdiagnosed, and a mild problem turns into a worse one on the next print.

What under-extrusion actually looks like

Under-extrusion shows up as gaps: thin, weak walls where lines of filament never fully touch their neighbors, small holes scattered across a top surface that should be solid, and layers that peel apart or crack under light pressure because there was not enough material to bond them. On vertical walls it often reads as a faint striping or see-through patchiness rather than a uniform surface. Common causes include a partially clogged nozzle, wet filament that sputters instead of flowing smoothly, an extrusion multiplier or flow rate set too low, worn or loose extruder gears that slip against the filament instead of gripping it, or a hotend running too cold for the material to melt fully.

What over-extrusion actually looks like

Over-extrusion shows up as excess: blobs and zits on the surface, corners that look rounded and swollen instead of crisp, fine details that blur together because too much plastic filled in the gaps, and parts measuring slightly oversized, which matters most on anything with a tight mechanical fit. Layers can look thicker or rougher than intended, and stringing between separate features sometimes appears alongside the excess material. The usual causes sit on the opposite side of the same settings: an extrusion multiplier or flow rate set too high, incorrect filament diameter entered in the slicer, e-steps calibrated to push more filament than the extruder gear actually advances, or a nozzle temperature high enough to thin the plastic more than the print wants.

Where the two get confused

A rough or inconsistent surface texture can show up in both directions, which is the most common source of misdiagnosis: a beginner sees a bumpy wall and assumes too much plastic, when thin, gap-filled ridges from under-extrusion can look similarly uneven from a distance. Stringing is another overlap point, usually a retraction or temperature issue rather than a flow direction problem at all, which is worth ruling out before touching extrusion settings either way. The clearest tell is what happens to the part’s actual dimensions and wall integrity: undersized, gappy, and structurally weak points to under-extrusion; oversized, blobby, and structurally excessive points to over-extrusion.

Why the fix moves in one direction, not both

Because these two problems sit on opposite ends of the same flow settings, whatever adjustment fixes one makes the other worse. Raising the extrusion multiplier to fix gappy under-extruded walls will push an already over-extruding printer further into blobs and oversized parts, and lowering it to clean up an over-extruding printer will starve a print that was actually under-extruding for an unrelated reason, like a partial clog or worn gears.
