Every guide on this site is written and maintained by one person. No editorial team stands behind the byline, and it seems fairer to say that than to let a plural pronoun imply otherwise.

Where the background comes from

I am Chriss R. My training is in industrial engineering and maintenance. That degree has less to do with designing machines than with keeping them running: fault trees, wear patterns, and the discipline of not replacing a part until you can explain why it failed.

Five years on a service bench

After my studies I ran the computer hardware fleet at a technical institute for five years. Over that time I diagnosed several hundred machines, printers included. Most of the work was unglamorous. Something arrived described as “broken” and the real job was narrowing that down: mechanism, electronics, consumable, driver, or the person operating it.

That habit shapes how the guides here are written. Symptom first, cheapest reversible test next, intrusive work last. It is the same order I used on the bench, for the same reason. Most faults are not where the owner thinks they are, and every part swapped without evidence costs money and hides the real cause.

Why an IBM 1403 still matters here

My final-year thesis was on the IBM 1403, a mainframe line printer.

Bringing up a printer from the 1960s on a 3D printing site sounds like nostalgia. It is not. The 1403 was a violently mechanical device, a moving chain of type slugs and hammers firing against a ribbon on millisecond timing. Everything that went wrong with it went wrong for a physical reason you could hear, feel or measure, and misalignment showed up as a defect on paper long before anything failed outright.

An FDM printer belongs to the same class of problem. Ringing on a corner is the frame telling you about its resonance. A rough first layer is a gap measurement you can read with your eyes. The technology changed completely. Reading a machine by the marks it leaves did not.

What I run today

At home I print on a Creality K2 Plus Combo. That is where most of my hands-on time goes.

Beyond my own machine, I regularly service other people’s printers, mainly Ender series machines and Halot resin printers. A fair share of the failure cases here come from that work. A printer you own gets tuned once and then behaves. A printer someone else has been fighting for three weeks arrives with the interesting problems.

What I do not claim

I do not own every printer discussed on this site. When a guide covers a machine that has never been on my bench, it is built from the manufacturer’s own documentation, firmware source and official knowledge base, and it says so rather than dressing that up as personal testing. The editorial policy sets out that rule in full.

Settings published here are not universal truths either. Numbers are starting points for a specific machine, nozzle and material. Your printer is not my printer.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, tell me. Include the printer model, the material and what you actually observed. I would rather fix a guide than defend it. The contact page reaches me directly.
