Multicolor 3D printing covers a handful of genuinely different mechanisms sold under one marketing label. Some printers swap filament through a single hotend, burning off some of every color at each change as purge waste. Others use several physical extruders and waste very little, at a real cost premium. A few designs sit in between. Before comparing specific models, it helps to know which mechanism a given price is actually buying, because a $300 add-on and a $3,600 toolchanger solve the same basic problem in close to opposite ways. The right pick depends more on what and how often you print than on the price alone.

Single nozzle with a filament swapper, or multiple nozzles
Most multicolor printers under $1,500 use one nozzle paired with an external unit, an AMS, a CFS, an ACE Pro, or a CANVAS, that feeds different filament spools into that single hotend one at a time. When the print calls for a color change, the old filament retracts, the new one loads, and the printer runs a purge sequence to clear mixed plastic out of the nozzle before it resumes. That purge often becomes a small tower or blob next to your print, and on a model with frequent color changes it can use more filament than the object itself. Prusa’s XL takes the other approach: a toolchanger with a separate nozzle already loaded for each material. Swapping heads takes a couple of seconds and there is little or nothing to purge, but you are paying for extra motors and hotends instead of one shared nozzle.
The budget combos this site already covers
Three specific combos already cover the sub-$500 range well: the Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo with ACE Pro, the Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo with CANVAS, and the Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo with AMS lite. All three are single-nozzle swappers that print in roughly the four to eight color range depending on configuration, and all three top out around a 250mm to 260mm build plate, aside from the smaller 180mm A1 Mini. What follows are the systems those three combos do not reach: higher color counts, larger build volumes, and the one mechanism that avoids the purge tower entirely.
Bambu Lab’s AMS 2 Pro, from the X2D up to the H2D
Bambu Lab consolidated its multicolor hardware in 2026. The AMS 2 Pro ($299 standalone) now works across the entire current lineup, from the A1 mini up through the H2D, and adds active drying to 65°C plus RFID filament recognition that the older AMS and AMS lite units do not have. Chain up to four AMS 2 Pro units and Bambu claims 16 or more colors on one print. The clearest step up from the budget tier is the X2D Combo at $899: a dual-nozzle printer, 256 x 256 x 260mm build volume, launched in April 2026 to sit between the small A1 series and the large H2D, with one AMS 2 Pro included. For a bigger build plate or high-temperature dual-material printing, the H2D Combo (up to 325 x 320 x 325mm, nozzle to 350°C) lists at $2,199 with AMS 2 Pro, though Bambu discounts it often enough that $1,700 to $2,000 is a realistic price to expect.
Creality’s K2 Plus with CFS: color at a bigger scale
Creality’s CFS units attach to the K2 series much like an AMS attaches to a Bambu printer: each CFS holds four spools, dries them with desiccant rather than active heat, and reads RFID tags on Creality filament. The K2 Plus Combo bundles the printer with one CFS for around $1,299 at list, and it is discounted often enough that closer to $900 to $1,000 is common. What sets it apart is the build volume, 350 x 350 x 350mm, well beyond anything Bambu or Prusa sell near this price, plus a chamber that heats to 60°C for warp-prone materials like ASA. Chain up to four CFS units and Creality advertises 16 colors on one print. Choose this over the Bambu options if you print large single-color parts most of the time and only need multicolor occasionally, since the CFS swap runs slower than AMS 2 Pro’s.
Prusa XL: five nozzles instead of one that swaps
The Prusa XL takes a different approach entirely. Instead of feeding several filaments through one nozzle, it holds up to five separate toolheads, each pre-loaded with its own material, and swaps between them in a couple of seconds per switch. Prusa’s own product page states that single-nozzle multicolor printers can waste up to four times the model’s weight in purged filament, and the XL avoids nearly all of that by design. The five-toolhead version costs $3,610 direct from Prusa, with single and dual-toolhead versions available for less and an upgrade path if you start smaller. Build volume is 360 x 360 x 360mm, larger than the Bambu and Creality options above. This is not the printer for someone who wants four PLA colors on a keychain. It makes sense for functional parts that combine materials, PETG with PLA supports, or rigid bodies with flexible overmolds, where filament cost and purge waste add up over time.
Multicolor 3D printer buying checklist
- Confirm whether the system swaps filament through one nozzle (purge waste, lower cost) or uses multiple toolheads (little waste, higher cost)
- Check how many colors the base unit supports out of the box, and what a second unit costs to add more
- Look for active filament drying if you print PETG, ASA, or nylon in multicolor, not only PLA
- Compare build volume against the models you actually want to print instead of relying on the advertised color count alone
- Check whether the multicolor unit reads RFID tags only on brand-name filament or works with any spool
- Treat purge waste as an ongoing filament cost, not only the up-front price of the combo
- Verify current stock and combo pricing directly on the manufacturer’s site, since bundle discounts change often
