The Saturn 4 is Elegoo’s base-tier MSLA resin printer, a 10-inch 12K mono LCD machine separate from the Saturn 4 Ultra and Saturn 4 Ultra 16K, both of which add an automated resin-dispensing tank and different self-test logic. Like the rest of Elegoo’s resin lineup, the Saturn 4 does not display numbered fault codes. Its firmware runs a self-test at power-up and again before each print, and if something fails, the touchscreen shows a short text message rather than a code number. Elegoo documents these messages as individual troubleshooting articles on wiki.elegoo.com rather than as one numbered list, so this index is organized the same way, by what the screen says and what part of the machine is involved.

One thing needs to be stated plainly before going further. A large share of Elegoo’s self-test documentation for this hardware generation, including the “Auto-leveling failed” and “Foreign matter detected” write-ups filed under the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K section of the wiki, states in its own metadata that it applies to the Mars 5 Ultra, Saturn 4 Ultra, and Saturn 4 Ultra 16K specifically, not the base Saturn 4. Elegoo also publishes shorter, model-agnostic versions of some of these same messages under its general resin-printer FAQ, and those generic pages are the ones actually relevant to the base Saturn 4. Where a fault below comes from the general FAQ or explicitly names the Saturn 4, that is noted. Where it does not, treat it as documentation for the same message text and mainboard family rather than a confirmed base-model page.

Self-test faults at power-up and before printing

Mechanical Sensor Error appears when the self-test flags a problem with the mechanical leveling sensor. Elegoo’s general resin-printer FAQ lists the causes as an unstable placement or nearby vibration source, loose or damaged sensor wiring, or a tangled spring wire on the sensor arm. The fix path starts with moving the printer to a stable, low surface (Elegoo’s own note suggests testing it directly on the floor), checking that the wiring is fully seated, and untangling the spring wire if it is caught. This page links a repair video labeled for the “Saturn 4 Series” generally, which is one of the few self-test pages that does not restrict itself to the Ultra models by name. If the wiring and placement checks do not clear it, Elegoo asks for photos of the motherboard before offering a replacement path.

X-axis Motor Status shows up after the self-test completes when the X-axis homing move is abnormal, often with an audible impact as the axis hits its limit. The general FAQ describes the fault as either the homing zero-return failing or the motor drive not functioning correctly. Causes and fixes cover loose or dislodged fasteners on the X-axis assembly, an incorrect firmware or gcode configuration flash, a damaged limit switch, or a damaged X-axis motor from resin ingress. Worth flagging: the repair videos linked from this page are labeled specifically for the “Saturn 4 Ultra/Saturn 4 Ultra 16K” and “Mars 5 Ultra,” with no separate video for the base Saturn 4, even though the fault text itself sits in the general FAQ section.

The automatic leveling process for the build plate did not succeed is the general-FAQ version of an auto-leveling failure, distinct from the more detailed “Auto-leveling failed, please troubleshoot” page that Elegoo scopes explicitly to the Ultra family. The generic page’s causes include residual cured resin or dirt interfering with the sensor, a build plate that is not properly aligned or installed, wiring or adapter-board problems at the mechanical sensor, an out-of-range detection threshold, and an unstable or vibrating surface. The recommended fix is to clean and reseat the build plate first, then check the sensor cable and adapter board, and finally perform a manual leveling adjustment if the automatic pass keeps failing.

A separate “Motor cannot operate properly” fault, covering Z-axis motor status errors during self-test, is published on the wiki only under a page titled for the Saturn 4 Ultra. It describes resin leakage into the motor housing as the most serious cause (treated as a safety issue requiring motor replacement), along with loose mounting screws, a poor Z-motor connector, an under-lubricated lead screw, or a tangled spring cable, diagnosed by swapping the X and Z motor connectors during a self-test. Elegoo has not published a parallel base Saturn 4 version of this page, so it is included here for awareness of the fault category rather than as confirmed Saturn 4 wording.

Resin tank and foreign-matter faults

“Foreign matter detected, please troubleshoot” also has a general-FAQ version separate from the Ultra-scoped one. Its listed causes are a build plate that is installed improperly or has a contaminated surface, resin viscosity high enough to trigger a false positive, wiring or adapter-board problems at the mechanical sensor, an unstable surface or nearby vibration, and cured resin left in the tank after a previous failed print. The fix sequence works through clearing cured residue and burrs from the build plate and tank first, then addressing resin viscosity by warming it if needed, then checking sensor wiring and placement.

Resin Tank Status Failure (“Resin Tank Not Detected”) does not apply to the base Saturn 4 at all. Elegoo’s own Saturn 4 Ultra documentation states this fault is tied to the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K’s automated resin-dispensing tank, which has physical dispensing tips and contact points the base Saturn 4’s resin vat does not have. It is listed here only so Saturn 4 owners know not to expect this message and can rule it out if something similar appears on their screen.

Power-on and touchscreen faults

The printer does not turn on (screen stays off entirely) is documented in Elegoo’s general resin-printer FAQ and is not restricted to any specific model. The wiki’s troubleshooting order starts at the wall: check the outlet’s main switch, then confirm the outlet supplies power using another appliance, then check the power supply cable connection and the printer’s own power switch. From there it moves inside the machine: check the power adapter’s indicator light, inspect internal cable connections, check the motherboard’s indicator lights, and, for anyone with electrical experience, measure the voltage at the motherboard’s power ports, replacing the adapter if output is unstable. If the machine powers on but the screen stays blank, the same page has you reconnect the touchscreen-to-motherboard cable in the correct orientation, inspect the screen for damage or resin leakage, reflash firmware if it is corrupted or missing, and swap in a spare touchscreen or ribbon cable if one is available to isolate the fault.

Separately, the wiki confirms the base Saturn 4 has its own documented spare parts for this subsystem, a touchscreen replacement part (A0S0C1) and a motherboard replacement part (A0S081), both filed directly under the Saturn 4 section rather than shared with the Ultra models. A troubleshooting article for the touchscreen getting stuck at the ELEGOO boot logo does exist on the wiki, but it is filed and labeled specifically for the Saturn 4 Ultra, so it is not included here as confirmed Saturn 4 wording.

Print-start faults

The print button not working even though a USB drive reads correctly is one of the few self-test-adjacent pages on the wiki that names the base Saturn 4 directly. Elegoo’s own page states plainly that the instruction applies to the Mars 5 Ultra, Saturn 4, and Saturn 4 Ultra together. Listed causes are a sliced file format the printer can’t parse, a slicer profile that does not match the printer, file corruption during saving or transfer, and firmware that is incompatible with the model or missing parameters. The fix path starts in the slicer: confirm the correct official printer preset is selected, or manually match the core parameters if no preset exists, then re-slice the model to rule out geometry errors. Next, reformat the USB drive to FAT32 at 32GB or smaller, since Elegoo specifically advises against NTFS. If the file and drive check out, the last step is restoring factory settings and running an OTA firmware update where supported, or flashing firmware manually from a FAT32 drive where it is not.
