How to Paint 3D Prints: A Practical Guide

Painting a 3D print sounds simple until you actually try it. You prime a part, slap on some acrylic, and the layer lines are still staring back at you through the color. Or the paint chips off the first time you handle the piece. Almost every problem comes down to the same three things: skipping prep, skipping primer, or putting paint on too thick. Fix those and everything else gets a lot easier.This guide walks through the process for PLA prints, since that’s what most home printers run, with notes on where resin and ABS need different handling.## Sand First, Paint SecondPaint follows the surface it’s given. If your print has visible layer lines, ridges from supports, or blobs from a rough retraction setting, paint won’t hide any of it. It usually makes it more obvious, because a glossy or semi-gloss coat catches light differently across an uneven surface.You don’t need a full sanding progression here since that’s really its own topic (see our dedicated sanding guide for grit-by-grit detail), but the short version is: start coarse enough to knock down the layer lines (something in the 150 to 220 grit range works for most FDM parts), then move up to finer grits before you touch a brush to the piece. Wet sanding with a bit of water cuts down on dust and gives a smoother result on the final passes.Once you’re done sanding, clean the part. Dust gets into every nook of a printed surface and it will show up as a gritty texture under paint if you don’t remove it. Wipe the part down, then go over it again with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth or paper towel. This also strips off oils from your fingers, which matters more than people expect. Skin oil can leave a print with spots where primer beads up instead of forming an even film.## Why You Need a PrimerPLA is not a porous material. Straight off the printer it has a fairly smooth, closed surface, and paint (especially acrylic) doesn’t have much to physically grab onto. You can paint directly onto bare PLA and it might look fine for a week, then start flaking at the edges where the piece gets handled.A primer solves two problems at once. First, it gives the paint a surface with actual tooth, something for the pigment to bond to instead of sliding around on smooth plastic. Second, and this is the part beginners underestimate, a filler primer physically fills in the tiny grooves left by each printed layer. Regular primer just coats those grooves and leaves them visible. A filler-style primer (sometimes labeled “high-build” or “filler primer” on the can) has thicker solids that sit in the low spots and level the surface out.Spray primer is the easiest way to get even coverage on a printed part, mainly because it doesn’t leave brush marks and it reaches into corners a brush would miss. Automotive filler primers made for plastic bumpers work well here and are widely used by people who paint printed props and cosplay parts.Don’t try to fill every layer line in one pass. Two to four light coats, with a light sanding pass between them using a fine grit like 400, does more than one heavy coat ever will. A heavy coat runs, pools in recesses, and can actually obscure detail you want to keep. Let each coat dry fully before sanding or adding the next one; rushing this step is one of the more common ways people end up redoing the whole primer stage.## Choosing the Right Paint**Acrylic paint** is the safe default for PLA and for most printed parts in general. It’s water-based, it doesn’t contain harsh solvents, and it won’t attack the plastic underneath. Hobby acrylics from brands built for miniature painting, Vallejo and Reaper among them, are formulated to go on thin and build up in layers without losing detail, which matters a lot on smaller printed figures.**Spray paint** gets you fast, even coverage over larger or simpler shapes, but you have to pay attention to what’s actually in the can. Some spray paints, particularly lacquer-based formulas, contain solvents aggressive enough to attack certain plastics. This is much more of a concern with ABS than PLA. On ABS, a strong lacquer can craze or stress-crack the surface, especially on thin-walled parts that already carry internal stress from printing. If you’re spraying ABS, or you’re not sure what’s in the can, test it on some scrap material first and use light passes rather than a heavy wet coat. PLA is generally more forgiving, but “generally” isn’t a guarantee, so testing a hidden spot before committing is still worth the extra five minutes.**Airbrushing** is the step up once you want smoother gradients, shading, or finer control than a brush allows. It’s more setup and more cleanup, but it lays down thinner, more even coats than a hand brush can manage, which is useful for anything with fine surface detail where you don’t want brush texture competing with the print’s own texture.## Technique: Thin Layers Beat Thick OnesThis is the single most repeated piece of advice across painting guides for a reason. A thick coat of paint dries unevenly, the outer surface skins over while the paint underneath is still wet, and the result is often a coat that cracks or wrinkles as it cures. Thin coats dry the way they’re supposed to, all the way through, and they let you build up opacity gradually without losing sharp detail on smaller features.Let each coat dry before adding the next. Acrylics usually feel dry to the touch within twenty to thirty minutes, but “dry enough to paint over” and “fully cured” aren’t the same thing, so give a part longer before you handle it roughly or apply a clear coat over it.If you’re painting a miniature or a display piece with any amount of surface detail, two techniques from the tabletop miniature world are worth learning:– **Washes** are heavily thinned paint, applied over a base coat, that flow into recesses and settle there. They create shadow and depth automatically, since the wash naturally pools in the low spots and stays thin on the raised areas. – **Dry brushing** is almost the opposite. You load a brush with paint, then wipe nearly all of it off on a paper towel before touching the model, so the brush only deposits color on raised edges and high points as you drag it across the surface. The usual guidance is to remove somewhere around 90 to 95 percent of the paint before it ever touches the piece.Used together, a wash for the recesses and a dry brush for the highlights, these two techniques do most of the work of making a printed part look less like a monochrome plastic object and more like something with real depth.## Sealing the Paint JobOnce the paint is done and fully cured, a clear coat protects it and locks in the finish. This step gets skipped more often than it should, and unsealed paint tends to scuff, chip at the edges, or pick up fingerprints over time.Clear coats come in matte, satin, and gloss finishes, and the choice is mostly about the look you’re going for. Matte suits most miniatures and props since it kills glare and reads as more natural. Satin sits in between and works well on functional parts you’ll actually handle. Gloss brings out saturation and depth but shows fingerprints and dust more readily.If the piece is going outside or sitting somewhere it gets regular sun exposure, look for a clear coat labeled UV-resistant. Sunlight breaks down both paint pigment and the plastic underneath over time, and a UV-rated topcoat slows that fade and brittleness considerably. As with primer, two or three thin coats beat one heavy one, both for appearance and for how evenly the coating cures.## Common Mistakes Worth Avoiding**Painting straight onto bare PLA without primer.** It might look okay at first, then chip at the first bump or drop.**Going in with one thick coat instead of several thin ones.** Thick paint cracks, sags, and hides detail instead of enhancing it.**Using the wrong spray paint on the wrong plastic.** A solvent-heavy lacquer that’s fine on PLA can craze ABS. Read the can, and when in doubt, test on scrap first.**Skipping the isopropyl alcohol wipe-down.** Dust and finger oils under primer cause spotty adhesion that’s hard to diagnose after the fact, since by the time you notice, several layers of work are already on top of it.**Forgetting the sealant.** A great paint job with no clear coat is a paint job that starts degrading the moment you start handling the piece.None of this is complicated once you’ve done it a couple of times. The order matters more than any single product: sand, clean, prime in thin coats, paint in thin coats, seal.
