Bambu Lab A1 mini slicer setup starts the same way any Bambu printer does: download Bambu Studio from Bambu Lab’s own site, which officially supports Windows and macOS and nothing else. Studio and most of the workflow are shared across the Bambu range, but the A1 mini has its own printer profile, a smaller build volume than the standard A1 and only one way onto a network. None of that carries over automatically if your last machine was the full-size A1.
The first-run wizard asks for your region before anything else. Getting that wrong can cause login problems later, since Bambu ties accounts to a region. It then asks which printer and nozzle combinations to show in the interface, and which filament presets to load. Pick the A1 mini here specifically. Everything chosen in the wizard can be changed later from the printer and filament dropdowns, but starting with the right profile saves a step.
Connectivity is worth confirming rather than assuming. The A1 mini connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) only, with no Ethernet port. Its only other physical connection is a Bambu-Bus port, used for AMS lite and similar accessories, not networking. The antenna is small, so if pairing keeps failing, moving the printer closer to the router fixes more than anything inside Studio does.
Pairing works one of two ways. Cloud-bound, through a Bambu Lab account, the same one Bambu Handy uses:
- Connect the A1 mini to Wi-Fi through its own touchscreen setup wizard.
- Log into your Bambu Lab account in Studio, then find the pairing code on the printer’s account or network screen, or scan its QR code from Bambu Handy.
- Enter that code in Studio’s Device panel to finish binding.
This adds remote start and monitoring, print history and Bambu Handy access, but needs Bambu’s cloud servers reachable.
LAN-only mode skips the cloud account entirely:
- On the printer’s screen, open Settings and turn on LAN Only Mode. Confirm the change and note the access code once it activates. Bambu’s instructions place this option slightly differently across firmware versions, but it’s always under the network settings.
- In Studio’s Device panel, find the printer, now shown with a lock icon.
- Enter the access code to bind.
LAN-only keeps everything on your own network and turns off Bambu Handy live view, remote start from outside the LAN and print history.
Once paired, pick "Bambu Lab A1 mini" from the printer list, not the plain "Bambu Lab A1." They are separate profiles with separate defaults, and choosing the wrong one carries the wrong bed size into your slice. The A1 mini ships with a 0.4 mm stainless steel nozzle on the same quick-swap hotend used across the A1 series, so the swap will feel familiar if you’ve already changed nozzles on a standard A1. Studio also lists 0.2 mm, 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm alternatives. Whatever size is actually installed has to match what is selected in both the printer’s settings and Studio’s printer profile, or the extrusion math will be wrong.
Selecting the A1 mini profile also sets the build plate shape and maximum print volume for you: 180 x 180 x 180 mm, a real difference from the standard A1’s 256 x 256 x 256 mm, not a rounding error. A model that fit comfortably on the full-size A1 may not fit the mini at all, so check before assuming it will. Bambu lists two compatible build plates for the A1 mini: the Textured PEI Plate that ships in the box, and the Smooth PEI Plate sold separately. Match whichever is actually on the printer to the plate selected in Studio, since that setting changes the first-layer and bed-adhesion defaults Studio uses.
Filament presets look mostly the same as on a standard A1, but the mini’s maximum bed temperature is lower, 80°C against the standard A1’s 100°C. Both printers are open-frame with no heated chamber, and Bambu’s own filament guidance already rates ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET and carbon or glass fiber blends as not recommended for large or high-infill parts on either machine, while rating PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as ideal. On the mini, the lower bed ceiling makes any high-temperature preset worth treating as experimental, even on the small, low-infill parts Bambu says those materials can still handle.
Getting a sliced file to the printer works three ways. Exporting to the micro SD card and loading it from the printer’s own file browser needs no network or Studio connection at all, worth remembering if Wi-Fi pairing gives you trouble. Sending directly over Wi-Fi to a printer already paired on your network works in either normal or LAN-only mode, and needs Bambu’s network plug-in installed, which the setup wizard offers to do automatically. Sending through a cloud-bound account works from anywhere, not just your own network, and is the one method LAN Only Mode switches off completely.
Coming from a standard A1, the differences that matter are the separate printer profile, the smaller 180 mm build volume and the 80°C bed ceiling. The nozzle hardware, the Wi-Fi-only connectivity and AMS lite as the multi-color path, rather than the full-size AMS units used on some other Bambu printers, all carry over unchanged. Treat the mini as its own profile from the first setup step, not a shrunk copy of the A1’s, and the rest of the process matches what you already know.
