A PEI sheet is a textured or smooth polymer surface that grips PLA and PETG through texture or surface chemistry, usually without any glue. A glass plate is flat and hard, and most filaments need a coating, glue stick, hairspray or a purpose-made adhesive, to stick to it at all. The two surfaces solve different problems: one is about convenience, the other is about finish.
Adhesion without babysitting the surface
Textured PEI is close to a “just print” surface for PLA and PETG at normal bed temperatures. Smooth PEI is pickier: PETG in particular can bond so well to smooth PEI that it tears the coating when removed cold, so many smooth-PEI users add a thin release layer for PETG specifically. Glass, by contrast, is chemically inert to most filaments, which is exactly why it needs help. Hairspray, a purple glue stick or a dedicated adhesive gives the plastic something to grab.
What the bottom of the part looks like
Glass produces a glossy, almost mirror-flat bottom surface, useful for lithophanes, signage and anything where that face is visible. Textured PEI leaves a matte, slightly textured bottom that hides minor surface flaws but will not pass for a smooth, reflective face. If the bottom surface finish matters for the part, that alone can decide the choice.
How each surface wears
PEI sheets degrade with use: metal scrapers, high bed temperatures and repeated thermal cycling gradually glaze the surface and reduce grip, and a heavily used sheet eventually needs replacing. Glass is close to wear-proof under normal use, borosilicate glass resists scratching, but it can crack from an impact or a sudden temperature swing, and a cracked plate is not repairable.
Getting the part off
A flexible PEI sheet, especially a magnetic spring-steel one, lets you pop it off the printer and flex the part loose once it has cooled. A fixed glass plate needs the print to cool fully so differential contraction breaks the bond, or a thin release agent that lets the part slide off with light pressure. This is also why most current printers use PEI-coated spring steel on top of a rigid base rather than plain glass, it borrows PEI’s adhesion and pairs it with an easy release method. Build plate checklist
- Match the surface to your main filament: textured PEI for PLA and PETG with minimal prep, glass with an adhesive for materials that need help sticking.
- Add a release agent for PETG on smooth PEI specifically, not on textured PEI.
- Let prints on glass cool fully before removal rather than forcing them off hot.
- Retire a PEI sheet once its surface looks glazed or shiny instead of matte, adhesion will keep dropping from there.
