Bambu Lab A1 mini: Loading, Unloading and Changing Filament

Load, unload and change filament on a Bambu Lab A1 mini, including whether AMS lite works with this model and what temperature range its hotend actually covers.

The A1 mini feeds filament from a rear spool holder or an optional AMS lite unit, through a short PTFE guide tube, into a filament hub on top of the toolhead. That hub holds the Hall sensor that checks for filament, right before the extruder gears pull it into the hotend: Bambu’s quick-swap, all-metal design, rated to 300°C, with a stock 0.4mm stainless steel nozzle. None of this needs disassembly for a routine spool change, but it explains why the printer behaves the way it does when you load, unload, or hit a snag partway through a roll.

Loading filament

From the rear spool holder:

  1. Cut the filament tip at an angle and straighten the first few centimeters so it doesn’t catch on the way in.
  2. Set the spool on the holder so it unwinds toward the guide, then feed the tip through the guide and into the toolhead inlet until the extruder takes hold of it.
  3. Tap Filament on the touchscreen, then Load. The nozzle heats on its own; don’t push cold filament in ahead of that.
  4. Watch the nozzle tip. Once it extrudes cleanly, tap Done. If nothing comes out, tap Retry and feed a little more filament through.

From AMS lite, push the tip into the matching numbered inlet until the feeder grabs it. It pulls the filament forward automatically, about 40cm into the PTFE tube, then you map that slot to the right material and color before slicing. With TPU loaded anywhere in the sequence, Bambu warns against tapping Load more than three times in a row, since repeated attempts can tangle the softer filament in the feed path.

Unloading filament

Tap Filament, select the loaded slot, then tap Unload. The printer heats the nozzle and retracts or trims the tip as needed, and the whole cycle takes about three minutes. Don’t pull on the filament before the screen tells you to. Once it’s clear, pull the remaining length free by hand and tuck the end through a hole in the spool so it can’t spring loose under another wrap later.

With AMS lite, unload from the toolhead first if it’s currently gripping that slot, then rotate the spool by hand while drawing the filament back out of the tube. If it snags, press the feeder’s release button to disengage the drive gear instead of pulling harder. Grip the whole spool with both hands when it comes free, thumb near the center of the hub, rather than tugging on one edge.

Does the A1 mini support AMS lite

Yes, but only as an optional add-on, not something bundled with the base printer. Bambu’s own AMS lite FAQ says A1 series printers, mini included, can connect to just one AMS lite at a time: four color slots, not multiple stacked units. A "Combo" bundle ships with one already installed, though the single-unit limit still applies. Spools need to be 40 to 68mm wide with a 53 to 58mm inner diameter to fit the holders. Keep flexible filaments like TPU, TPE, and PVA out of AMS lite entirely, along with most carbon and glass fiber blends, which Bambu says can crack or wear the feed channel; its own smoother PLA-CF and PETG-CF are named exceptions. Anything else abrasive or floppy belongs on the external spool holder instead. One mini-specific detail: Combo tubes run 580mm and 700mm, versus 730mm and 850mm for the full-size A1, and reusing the longer tubes adds slack that can trigger false tangle alarms.

Runout and mid-print changes

The Hall sensor sits at the toolhead itself, not just at the spool, so it registers the moment filament stops arriving rather than estimating from spool rotation. Check it directly: feed filament into any toolhead inlet and a green dot appears on screen; pull it back out and the dot clears. Running standalone, a runout pauses the job and waits for a reload. With AMS lite loaded, Bambu’s documentation confirms it switches automatically to another spool with matching filament properties, if one is available, no pause needed.

Swapping filament between two separate jobs is simple, through either the touchscreen or Bambu Handy’s remote filament controls, though the app’s exact menu location has shifted across updates. Mid-print swaps on a single-spool setup are rougher. Bambu Studio lets you insert a pause at a chosen layer before slicing, but users report the unload option greying out once that pause hits, with no dedicated one-tap "change filament now" workflow the way AMS lite handles its own swaps. Test this on a low-stakes print before trusting it on one that matters.

What this hotend is rated for

At 300°C max nozzle temperature and 80°C max bed temperature, Bambu’s own spec sheet lists PLA, PETG, TPU, and PVA as compatible materials for the A1 mini. The all-metal design, with no PTFE liner in the melt zone, is what allows that ceiling; a PTFE-lined throat would need to stay well below 300°C to avoid degrading the liner. The stock nozzle is stainless steel, fine for all of those but not built to survive abrasive fill for long. For carbon or glass fiber filament, swap in a hardened steel nozzle first (Bambu sells one for this printer); the stainless version wears out fast under fiber even though the hotend itself runs hot enough to melt those materials without trouble.

Keep opened spools sealed with desiccant between changes, covered in the site’s filament storage guide. A clog is one of the more common reasons to force an unplanned change: clearing a clogged nozzle covers that safely.
