The A1 mini is ready for a first print once the frame is assembled, a plate is seated, and initial network and firmware setup is done. What happens in the next twenty minutes decides a lot: a good first layer usually means a good rest of the spool, and a bad one is worth catching early. Here is what to check first, how to send that job, whether AMS lite belongs in it, and what the printer should look and sound like while it works.
Three things need to be true before you queue anything.
- The plate is clean. Bambu’s first-layer troubleshooting material puts a dirty plate at the top of the list. Wash the textured PEI plate with warm water and dish detergent, then handle it by the edges: skin oil alone causes patchy adhesion.
- Filament is loaded and reasonably dry, whether through AMS lite or the rear spool holder. Confirm the toolhead shows filament seated before you queue anything, and keep spools sealed with desiccant between sessions. Damp filament turns to steam in the hotend and prints inconsistently.
- Calibration has run: bed leveling and flow dynamics calibration are checkboxes available when starting a job, from the printer’s screen or Bambu Studio, and Bambu recommends leaving both on for a first print. Skipping them to save two minutes is the single most common reason a first layer goes wrong.
There are three practical ways to start the job itself.
- Print the demo file already on the machine’s preloaded 32 GB SD card. Its Print Files menu lists sample models you can send straight from the touchscreen.
- Slice something small in Bambu Studio: a calibration cube, or a small test model like the classic 3DBenchy. Keep the job modest in size and print time, so a mistake costs twenty minutes, not four hours.
- Queue it from Bambu Handy on a phone once the printer is bound to your account, useful when you are not near a computer. Bambu Studio gives a clearer view of which nozzle diameter and filament profile you are sending, worth the extra minute while you are still learning the machine.
Whichever route you pick, leave bed leveling and flow calibration on when prompted, and stay within sight of the printer for the first layer.
Whether AMS lite belongs in this first print is worth checking rather than assuming. Bambu is specific here: the A1 mini can run one AMS lite unit for up to four colors, and its first-print instructions for that combo call for enabling "Use AMS" along with bed leveling and flow calibration. It does not support the larger, enclosed AMS built for other Bambu printers, and AMS lite itself is an optional add-on, not something every A1 mini ships with. Expect a pause before anything extrudes: the bed and nozzle heat, the printer runs its leveling pass, and flow calibration runs too if selected, before the model starts. The A1 mini is an open-frame machine with no enclosure, so nothing muffles fan and motor noise the way a closed chamber would. Bambu’s marketing figure for quiet mode sits in the high 40s dB range, in practice closer to a desk fan with occasional sharper motor noise on fast direction changes. None of that indicates a problem. What matters is the first layer itself.
The same troubleshooting material describes the two failure directions plainly. A nozzle sitting too high leaves filament thin, wavy, and barely stuck to the plate. One sitting too low squishes lines into raised, dragged edges, sometimes with audible scraping. A good first layer is the boring result: smooth, uniform lines that bond into each other with no visible gaps and no curling at the corners. The A1 mini’s camera is a basic live view and timelapse unit with a low frame rate, useful for tracking overall progress but not fine first-layer detail, and this model has none of the automated first-layer inspection Bambu’s enclosed printers use. Watching in person for the first few minutes still beats the feed alone.
If the first few lines show peeling, dragging, or scattered gaps in more than one spot, stop rather than hope the next layer fixes it. The wiki treats a poor first layer as a signal to fix the cause, not push through it, since a bad start rarely recovers. Cancel from whichever interface is in front of you: the touchscreen, Bambu Studio, and Bambu Handy all expose the control. Let the nozzle cool before touching anything, then reclean the plate, rerun bed leveling, and check that the hotend’s retaining hardware is seated and tight. Once a print finishes, or once you have deliberately stopped one, let the plate cool to room temperature before removing anything. Bambu is clear on this: pulling a still-warm part free risks marking the plate or warping thin sections, while a fully cooled plate usually releases the model on its own once flexed slightly. Keep a scraper as a last resort for anything still stuck once the plate is cold.
