Picking a Model for Your First Print
You have two practical options for a first print.
Use one of the pre-loaded or USB-stored files. The H2D ships with pre-sliced models in its internal memory, and Bambu’s own first-print guide recommends keeping a USB drive attached for print recordings and history. The catch is specific to this printer: because these files are already sliced, the filament in each one is locked to a particular hotend, left or right, and that assignment cannot be changed from the touchscreen. If the filament you have loaded doesn’t match what a pre-sliced file expects, move that filament to the AMS slot or external spool position feeding the correct side rather than trying to force the file onto the other nozzle.
Slice something simple yourself in Bambu Studio. A benchy or a small calibration model works well because both are fast to print and easy to judge by eye. For a first print, stick to a single material on a single nozzle unless you specifically want to test the dual-nozzle workflow.
Either path assumes the same starting point: at least one hotend loaded with filament, and a printer that has already been through its bed leveling and nozzle offset calibration from setup.
Starting the Print From the Touchscreen
- Confirm the build plate installed matches what you intend to print on, and check filament is loaded and detected on the hotend(s) you plan to use.
- Tap Print Files and select a model.
- Confirm the build plate and nozzle information the printer shows you. Auto Bed Leveling, Flow Dynamics Calibration, and Nozzle Offset Calibration are all set to run automatically by default here; Bambu’s own guidance leaves them on for a first print.
- Tap Next, then match the filament loaded in your AMS or external spool to what the print calls for on each hotend, and tap Print.
If you can’t find the filament you need on the matching screen, the likely cause is that it’s loaded on the wrong side. Move it to the AMS or spool position connected to the correct extruder rather than continuing.
Starting the Print From Bambu Studio
- Import the model, adjust settings if needed, and click Slice Plate.
- Click Print Plate. A window opens where you confirm the target printer and filament mapping before sending.
- Send the job.
For a model that uses two colors or materials, Studio automatically works out the most filament-efficient way to split the job between the two hotends, favoring an arrangement where each nozzle handles one filament for the whole print rather than switching internally. If you’d rather set this yourself, use Rearrange Filament and switch to Customize, then click a filament icon or the exchange control to move a color to the other extruder.

What the Calibration Checks Do on This Print
The H2D’s Auto Bed Leveling and Nozzle Offset Calibration, covered in full in the bed leveling and calibration guide, both run again here as part of the normal pre-print sequence rather than being a one-time setup step. Auto Bed Leveling reads bed height at multiple points through the toolhead’s eddy current sensors. Nozzle Offset Calibration checks where the idle hotend’s tip actually sits relative to the active one, using a calibration coil built into the heatbed, so that a print switching between nozzles doesn’t come out with a visible step at the handoff point. Flow Dynamics Calibration, when enabled, estimates the pressure-advance-style K value for whichever filament is loaded.
None of this replaces watching the first layer yourself. It catches misalignment and bed-height inconsistency; it doesn’t catch a plate that needs cleaning or a bed temperature that’s wrong for the material.
AI Print Monitoring on the First Layer and Beyond
The H2D doesn’t use a lidar for print monitoring the way the X1 Carbon or X2D do. Instead, its nozzle camera feeds an onboard detector that watches for spaghetti (filament that has come loose from the model and is piling up), nozzle clumping, air printing, and general debris around the toolhead, while the separate live chamber camera covers general viewing and timelapse. When AI print monitoring is enabled, this detection starts automatically once the printer finishes its preparation phase and the nozzle begins the actual model.
You can adjust how sensitive this monitoring is from Settings. A stricter setting pauses on the first sign of a problem; a looser one waits for something more obvious. For a first print on an unfamiliar machine, the stricter setting costs you nothing worse than an occasional false pause.
What to Watch During the Print
- Layer adhesion and warping, especially at the corners, in the first several minutes. This is a bed adhesion or cooling issue, not something the calibration checks above will catch after the fact.
- Chamber and bed temperature, both visible on the touchscreen and in Studio’s Printer tab. The H2D’s chamber heats actively up to a documented 65°C for engineering filaments; for PLA it stays unheated and the fan runs more aggressively.
- The purge chute, if your print uses more than two colors or materials. Splitting work across two nozzles cuts down on purging compared to a single-nozzle printer, but it doesn’t eliminate it once a job needs a third color, and heavy multi-color jobs fill the purge container faster than you’d expect.
- Remote monitoring through Bambu Studio or the Bambu Handy app, both of which show the live camera feed if you don’t want to stand next to the printer the whole time.
Removing the Part and Clearing the Plate
Let the bed cool to room temperature before removing anything; pulling a part off a hot plate risks warping it or damaging the plate surface. Once it’s cool, remove the model, then scrape off the prime tower and any leftover calibration lines before putting the plate back in the printer. If you’re using the textured PEI plate, avoid cleaning it with acetone, since it damages the surface; dish soap, water, and a sponge are enough for normal residue.
