Bambu Lab H2D: Unboxing and Safe First Setup

Unbox a Bambu Lab H2D, clear its transport locks and safety key jack, and get through Wi-Fi pairing and Bambu Handy binding before this dual-nozzle printer’s first heated-chamber calibration pass.

What’s in the box

The base H2D ships with the printer itself, a textured PEI build plate already on the heatbed, a spool holder, an accessory box, a toolbox, a power cord, and a printed quick start guide. Buy the AMS Combo and you also get an AMS 2 Pro unit, its own PTFE tube and desiccant packs, and a second spool holder for it. Buy the Laser Full Combo and the box grows again: a laser module, a digital cutting module, a laser safety emergency stop button, a laser platform and cutting platform, cutting mats, and a supply box of sample materials for engraving and cutting. Read the quick start guide before touching any of it. Bambu ships the warranty leaflet and safety disclaimer as separate printed inserts, not text printed on the box itself.

The toolbox holds a spare 0.4 mm nozzle, a silicone sock for the hotend, a filament cutter, an unclogging pin, a nozzle wiping pad, a nozzle blocker, a scraper blade, spare screws for the scraper and spool holder, H1.5 and H2.0 Allen keys, a camera privacy cover, and lubricant oil and grease. The Laser Full Combo’s toolbox adds a 45-degree fine-point blade, a weeding tool, and a laser homing marker.

Clearing the transport locks

The H2D is heavier and larger than Bambu’s consumer printers, and Bambu’s own unboxing instructions call for two people to lift it out of the carton. Don’t try this solo, and don’t lift it by the top cover or side panels.

  1. Remove the four clips on the bottom of the carton and pull the moisture-proof bag down and away from the box.
  2. With a second person, lift the printer out by its base and set it on a stable, level surface, then strip off the remaining packaging and tape.
  3. Lift off the top glass cover, then remove the four screws that lock the heatbed in place. Keep these screws. Unlike some Bambu printers, where unboxing means tightening screws, here you’re removing them to free the bed, and you’ll need them again if you ever disassemble the Z-axis or ship the printer.
  4. Remove the foam blocks from both threaded rods and the tape inside the chamber.
  5. Cut the zip tie holding the power cable box, then cut the zip ties securing the toolhead and cable chain. Cut carefully. The belt runs right next to them, and slicing it turns a five-minute unboxing job into a repair job.
  6. Slide the toolhead toward the front door and pull out the foam wedged under the cable chain and the X-axis rail.
  7. Set the top cover back on the printer.
  8. Install the two external spool holders at the back, connect the short and long PTFE tubes between the holders and the printer’s filament inlets, and give each tube a gentle pull to confirm it’s seated.

Power and electrical safety

The H2D runs on 100-120V or 200-240V AC at 50/60 Hz. Peak draw hits 1320 W on a 110V circuit or 2200 W on a 220V circuit, mostly during bed heat-up, and settles to around 1050 W average once it’s actually printing. Plug it into a grounded outlet. Bambu’s own manual lists improper grounding as an electrical leakage risk, not just a print quality issue.

The printer will not power on at all without its safety key seated in the jack on the back. Bambu ships one pre-installed. If nothing happens when you flip the switch after connecting power, check that key before you check the outlet or the cord.

Heated chamber and material safety

This isn’t a passively heated enclosure. A PTC heating element and circulation fan bring the chamber up to a maximum of 65°C, which is what lets the H2D handle ABS, ASA, PC, PA, and carbon or glass fiber reinforced filaments that would warp badly in an open-frame printer. An automatic top vent and a rear exhaust fan open for cooling and close for heating on their own, so don’t block the top or back of the machine while it’s running.

Built-in filtration (a G3 pre-filter, an H12 HEPA filter, and an activated carbon stage) handles normal FDM fumes, but a well-ventilated room is still the right call, especially the first time you run an engineering filament at full chamber temperature.

If your H2D has the laser module

The laser module is not standard equipment on the base H2D or the AMS Combo. It ships only with the Laser Full Combo, as a 10W or 40W option, and Bambu also sells an upgrade kit to add it to a non-laser machine later. A non-laser H2D uses plain tempered glass on its top cover, front door, and side windows. A laser-equipped machine needs the laser safety version of that glass, which comes preinstalled on the Laser Full Combo. Try to run the laser function without it, and the printer forces the job to stop.

Installing the laser module also means installing an emergency stop button with its own built-in safety key, which takes the place of the plain safety key in that same jack on the back of the printer. Someone has to stay with the machine for the entire laser or cutting job, ready to hit that button. Bambu’s own documentation is blunt about why: laser work involves a high-energy beam near potentially flammable material, and the company advises against leaving it unattended under any circumstances. Placement and ventilation

Give the H2D a stable, level surface rated for its weight. The printer alone is about 31 kg, and an AMS 2 Pro mounted on top adds more, so a flimsy shelf isn’t the right home for it. Leave clearance behind the machine for airflow, and if you have a laser module, for the smoke ventilation pipe too (Bambu recommends at least 30 cm). Pick a cool, dust-free spot out of direct sun and away from drafts that could throw off chamber temperature control.

You’ll also notice the H2D ships with a nozzle camera, a toolhead camera, and a live chamber view camera built in as standard equipment, plus a privacy cover in the toolbox if you’d rather keep an eye closed when you’re not printing. A BirdsEye camera ships too on the Laser Full Combo, for tool alignment. None of this needs setup beyond what the wizard walks you through, but it’s worth knowing the cameras are there from the first power-on.

Powering on, Wi-Fi, and Bambu Handy

With the safety key seated and the spool holders and tubes installed, connect the power cord and switch the printer on at the back. Once the Bambu Lab logo clears, the touchscreen walks you through language, region, and Wi-Fi selection. Pick your network and enter the password.

To bind the printer to your Bambu Lab account, open Bambu Handy on your phone, sign in, and scan the QR code on the printer’s screen. The printer needs an active Wi-Fi connection for this step to work, so do it after network setup, not before.

AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT on first connection

If your H2D came with an AMS 2 Pro, its automatic feeding and drying both run off the printer’s own power through the 6-pin cable. No separate power brick needed for that first unit. Add a second AMS 2 Pro and want both drying at the same time, though, and the second one needs its own external power adapter. The printer’s built-in supply only stretches to drying one unit at a time.

AMS HT is a different, separately sold unit built for high-temperature engineering filament, and it isn’t included in any of the standard H2D bundles. If you add one, it always needs its own AC power cord for drying, no matter how many AMS 2 Pro units you already have running. The first time you connect an AMS HT, run the setup from the Filament page’s AMS Setup screen so the printer can detect which of its two hotends that unit is feeding. Between AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT units, the H2D supports up to 12 connected at once across 24 total slots, which is well beyond what most first setups need but worth knowing if you plan to scale up later.

The first-run calibration wizard

Once you’re bound to Bambu Handy, the printer moves into its own pre-print routine: preheating the bed and hotend, bed leveling, and flow calibration if you choose to run it. Watch this first pass rather than walking away. Bambu’s own AMS Combo instructions have you leave a piece of foam under the heatbed in place through this calibration and only take it out once the pass finishes, so don’t assume every piece of foam comes out before power-on.
