Bambu Lab P1P: Bambu Studio Setup

A practical walkthrough of installing Bambu Studio, connecting a P1P over cloud or LAN Only Mode, and setting the correct printer, nozzle, plate, and AMS profiles before your first slice.

If you’ve already unboxed and leveled your P1P, the next step is getting it talking to Bambu Studio on your computer. This guide covers downloading and installing the slicer, adding the printer over the cloud or through LAN Only Mode, picking the right printer, nozzle, and plate profile, setting up AMS if your unit has one, and finding Bambu’s official material profiles for this machine.

Downloading and installing Bambu Studio

Bambu Studio is free and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux from the Software section of bambulab.com, with Linux and older builds also mirrored on the official BambuStudio GitHub repository.

  • Windows: choose the installer (.exe) or the portable (.zip) build. The installer walks through a normal setup wizard. Windows 10 or later is required.
  • macOS: download the .dmg, then drag the app into Applications. macOS 10.15 or later is required.
  • Linux: the AppImage needs its executable bit set before it will launch. Bambu officially targets Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, though the AppImage runs on most modern distributions.

On first launch, Studio asks you to pick a printer model to load its default profiles. You can sign in with a Bambu Lab account at this point to sync filament and process profiles across devices, or skip the sign-in and use the slicer fully offline. Signing in isn’t required to slice or print; it only affects remote access and profile syncing.

Adding the P1P: cloud account vs. LAN Only Mode

Bambu Studio talks to the printer in one of two ways, and the choice affects more than just how you click print.

Cloud mode (Bambu account binding)

This is the default path most people end up on, since it’s part of the printer’s own first-time network setup wizard.

  1. Make sure the P1P is connected to Wi-Fi and has internet access.
  2. On the printer’s screen, use the arrow buttons to open Settings, then Account, and bind the printer to your Bambu Lab account (this generates a PIN code on screen, or you can bind through the Bambu Handy phone app instead). Unlike the X1 Carbon, the P1P navigates this menu with physical buttons on a small display rather than a touchscreen, so expect to scroll with the arrow keys and confirm with the center button.
  3. In Bambu Studio, sign in with the same Bambu account, open the Device tab, and confirm the pairing. If you bound the printer through Handy first, it should already show up in Studio’s device list once you’re signed into the matching account.

Once bound this way, the printer shows up in Studio’s Device tab whether you’re on the same network or somewhere else entirely, and you get remote monitoring, live camera view, and control through the Bambu Handy app.

LAN Only Mode

The P1P supports LAN Only Mode the same way the X1 Carbon does. Bambu’s own wiki lists the P1 series alongside X1 in its LAN mode setup guide, so this isn’t a feature limited to the higher-end machine.

  1. On the printer, open Settings, then LAN Only, and turn the toggle on. There’s a separate option here for LAN mode liveview if you want the camera feed to still work locally.
  2. The same screen displays the printer’s access code and, if needed, its IP address.
  3. In Bambu Studio, open the Device tab, select "no printer added," and enter the access code. If your computer and printer sit on the same subnet, Studio usually finds the printer automatically once the code matches. On networks with VLANs, guest networks, or other segmentation that blocks local discovery broadcasts, you’ll need to enter the printer’s IP address along with the access code.

One quirk worth knowing about: for privacy reasons, Studio doesn’t store the printer’s IP address between sessions when you’ve added it manually. On a segmented network, that means re-entering the IP and access code each time you restart the slicer.

You can switch between the two modes later from the printer’s settings screen. Turning LAN Only Mode off returns the printer to normal Wi-Fi/cloud behavior; turning it on cuts remote access until you turn it back off.

What cloud and LAN actually cost you

The two modes produce identical print quality. Once a G-code file reaches the printer, the machine executes it the same way regardless of how it got there. The differences are about what leaves your network and what you can do while away from the printer.

Cloud mode relays print jobs and status data through Bambu’s servers, even when your computer and printer sit three feet apart on the same desk. In exchange, you get remote monitoring and control from the Bambu Handy app anywhere with internet, print history that follows you across devices, and the ability to start prints again from your phone’s history list.

LAN Only Mode keeps everything local. Nothing about the print itself, your files, or your usage leaves the building beyond an occasional NTP time check. The trade-off is that Bambu Handy loses remote access to that printer, and conveniences tied to the cloud, such as push notifications or reprinting from phone history, stop working. Because the printer isn’t depending on an internet connection once a file is sent, an ISP outage or a Bambu server hiccup won’t interrupt a print already running.

If you print anything sensitive, or you just don’t want print data leaving your home network, LAN Only Mode is the more private choice. If you want to check on prints from work or get a phone notification when something finishes, cloud mode is the one that supports that.

Selecting the printer, nozzle, and build plate profile

Once the printer is added, Bambu Studio still needs to know exactly which hardware configuration you’re slicing for.

  • Printer profile: in the Prepare tab, the printer dropdown lets you search for "Bambu Lab P1P." There is a single P1P profile, not a separate one for AMS: whether your unit is a Combo or a base P1P with AMS added later, you pick the same printer profile and Studio detects the AMS separately once it’s connected. Studio ships presets for each nozzle size the P1 series hotend supports: 0.2mm, 0.4mm, 0.6mm, and 0.8mm. Pick the one that matches what’s actually mounted, since the P1P doesn’t detect nozzle diameter automatically.
  • Nozzle material: the P1P ships standard with the same X1/P1 series hotend used on the P1S, fitted with a 0.4mm stainless steel nozzle rated up to 320 degrees Celsius. This differs from the X1 Carbon, which ships with a hardened steel nozzle by default. A hardened steel nozzle is available as an upgrade for abrasive filaments like carbon or glass fiber blends; if you install one, make sure the corresponding Studio profile matches, since the two materials behave differently under wear.
  • Build plate: the left sidebar has its own dropdown for the plate installed on the machine: Cool Plate, Engineering Plate, High Temp Plate, or Textured PEI Plate. Bambu’s build plate documentation groups the P1 series with the X1 series under the same 256 x 256 mm plate lineup, so the P1P has the same set of plate options as the X1 Carbon rather than a shorter list. The Textured PEI Plate ships as the standard plate. Picking the wrong plate profile changes the bed temperature and adhesion settings Studio applies, which can cause a print to fail to stick or to overheat filament that shouldn’t run that hot.

One P1P-specific point worth flagging: the printer has no enclosure and no active chamber heating. The plate and bed temperature settings in a profile are the same regardless of chassis, but a material that wants warm, still air around the part, such as ABS or ASA on the High Temp Plate, is more exposed to room drafts here than on the enclosed X1 Carbon. Keep the printer away from open windows and air vents if you’re running warp-prone materials.

Setting up AMS in Bambu Studio

If your P1P has an AMS attached, whether it came with a Combo bundle or was added afterward, Studio detects it as soon as the printer connection is active, in either cloud or LAN mode. This is the standard AMS unit, the same one used on the X1 Carbon, not the AMS Lite that ships with the A1 series, so slot handling and RFID detection in Studio work the same way described for the X1 Carbon.

For official Bambu spools, the AMS reads the material type and color automatically through RFID as soon as the spool is loaded. For third-party filament, you’ll need to tag each slot manually: click the pencil icon on that slot and set the material type and color yourself. An untagged slot shows a question mark until you do this, though you can still print from it as long as the material type matches what the slicer expects.

Inside the slicer, the filament list you build for a project is intentionally separate from the physical order of your AMS slots. You assign filaments to parts of the model as you normally would, then slice. When you send the job to the printer, Studio shows a mapping screen that matches each filament in your project to an AMS slot, prioritizing a matching material type first and the closest color match second. You can override this mapping manually in that dialog if the automatic match picks the wrong slot.

Finding official Bambu material profiles for the P1P

Bambu’s own filament profiles are already built into Bambu Studio’s filament library and appear automatically once you’ve selected the correct P1P printer and nozzle preset. You don’t need to download them separately for standard Bambu-branded filament.

For checking which specific filaments are validated for which nozzle, plate, and AMS combination, Bambu maintains a compatibility reference table on wiki.bambulab.com titled "Filament guide – Printer, Nozzle, AMS, Build Plate, Glue Compatibility and Required Parameters." It’s worth a look before buying a new material, especially anything that needs a hardened nozzle or a specific plate. If you stay signed into your Bambu account in Studio, new or updated filament profiles get pulled in through the normal cloud sync as Bambu adds them.
