What counts as large format now

In the current consumer market, printers with a bed around 400mm or more per side are generally marketed as large format, while 300 to 350mm machines sit in a middle tier that covers most oversized hobby projects without the price and footprint jump of a true large-format machine.

Single large-format machines

The Anycubic Kobra 3 Max (420 x 420 x 500mm build volume) is currently listed around $493 to $804 for the printer alone depending on promotions, with the Combo bundle including the ACE Pro multi-color unit priced around $999. It is one of the largest build volumes available at this price point, with print speeds up to 600mm/s.

The Elegoo Neptune 4 Max (420 x 420 x 480mm build volume, typically listed under $500) offers a similar bed size on Klipper firmware with input shaping for vibration control, making it a comparable budget option to the Kobra 3 Max for buyers who want to weigh both before deciding.

The QIDI MAX4 (390 x 390 x 340mm build volume, around $1,049) has a smaller bed area than the two machines above but adds an actively heated chamber to 65°C and a hotend rated to 370°C, which matters if your large prints are ABS, ASA, or a carbon-fiber filament rather than PLA. Large warp-prone parts are exactly where a passive or absent enclosure causes the most cracking and layer separation.

The multi-part alternative

A big printer is not the only way to make a big object. Splitting a model into sections in your slicer, printing them on a smaller enclosed machine, and joining them with adhesive or connector pins is a workflow many prop makers and furniture builders use even when a large-format printer is available, because it lets you use faster, cheaper, more established machines and reserves the large-format purchase for projects that truly need one continuous piece. Printers with automated multi-plate ejection or large multi-material units can also run a queue of smaller parts overnight, which covers a lot of the same ground as one giant bed without the footprint or cost.

Footprint, weight, and moving the printer

A 420mm or larger bed usually comes with a matching increase in overall footprint and weight, and that is easy to underestimate when comparing spec sheets online. Large-format machines can weigh considerably more than a standard desktop printer and may need two people to move safely, and they take up meaningfully more desk or shelf space once cabling and clearance for the door or gantry are accounted for. Measure the path from your delivery point to the final location before ordering, not just the room where the printer will end up, since stairwells and narrow doorways are a common surprise with these machines.

Bed adhesion and warping at scale

Larger prints amplify small problems. A print that lifts one corner on a 200mm part can warp badly enough to fail entirely at 400mm. Check that any large-format printer you consider has auto bed leveling across the full plate, not just at the corners, and consider whether you need chamber heating for the specific material you print most.

  • Decide whether a single large bed or a split-and-join workflow better fits your typical project size.
  • Check whether the bed heats and levels evenly across its full area, not just near the center.
  • Confirm print time and material cost at full-bed scale, since large prints multiply both quickly.
  • Check chamber heating if your large prints use ABS, ASA, or another warp-prone material.
  • Verify your workspace has room for the printer’s full footprint plus door clearance and cooling airflow.
  • Check the availability of a larger nozzle option if print time at full scale is a concern.
