A brass nozzle transfers heat well, costs little and works for ordinary PLA, PETG and TPU. Hardened steel resists abrasive fillers but conducts heat differently. The harder material is useful when the filament needs it, not automatically better for every printer.
Why brass is the normal starting point
Brass reaches a stable temperature quickly and makes consistent flow easier at ordinary speeds. It machines cleanly, so the opening and flat tip can be precise at a low price. Its weakness is wear: carbon fiber, glow pigment, metal and some mineral fillers gradually enlarge the opening.
What hardened steel changes
Hardened steel survives abrasive material much longer. Its lower thermal conductivity can require a small temperature or speed adjustment, especially at high flow. Use a profile intended for the nozzle and confirm that the printer’s heater can maintain a stable reading.
Wear changes dimensions before failure
An abrasive spool may not create a sudden clog. Instead, the nozzle opening becomes wider and the tip shape changes. Lines grow inconsistent, fine detail fades and flow calibration drifts. Compare the used nozzle with a known good part rather than waiting for a complete blockage.
Other nozzle materials
Nickel-plated copper offers strong heat transfer and a surface that resists plastic buildup, depending on the coating. Ruby-tipped and tungsten-carbide nozzles target abrasion with different cost and installation requirements. Printer compatibility, maximum temperature and tightening method still come first.
Nozzle-material checklist
- Plain filament does not require hardened steel.
- The filler maker’s minimum diameter is respected.
- The nozzle thread and length match the hotend.
- The profile accounts for the nozzle’s heat transfer.
- Replacement follows the printer’s hotend procedure.
Nozzle material and opening size are separate choices. Read the nozzle-size guide before changing both at once, or compare 0.4mm vs 0.6mm nozzle diameters directly. Nozzle material also has nothing to do with the hotend’s PTFE liner or all-metal design, that is a separate upgrade decision.
