Bambu Lab A1 mini: Unboxing and Safe First Setup

Unbox a Bambu Lab A1 mini, clear its transport locks in the right order, and get through Wi-Fi pairing, Bambu Handy binding and a firmware check before this open-frame printer’s first heat-up.

The box holds the printer itself, installation screws, a purge wiper with its own screws, a spool holder and bracket, one 580 mm PTFE tube, a textured PEI plate, a sample spool of filament, an unclogging pin, H2 and H1.5 Allen keys, a heatbed nozzle wiper, a cable organizer, a scraper blade, a spare filament cutter, lubricating grease, and a printed quick start guide sitting on the heatbed itself. Read that card first: Bambu tucks its unboxing precautions into the card rather than onto the box lid.

Work through the transport locks in this order, since a couple of them are easy to miss:

  1. Open the plastic bag and lift off the cardboard on top. Some small accessories are embedded in it, so check before setting it aside.
  2. Lift the printer out by supporting the rear cover of the Z-axis with your hand. Don’t grab the metal Z-axis rails directly.
  3. Pull the foam padding out from under the heatbed and past the end of the X-axis rail, then remove the plastic bag sleeved over that rail.
  4. Remove four screws to release the Z-axis limiter bracket, the part that keeps the gantry from shifting in transit.
  5. Cut the zip tie holding the toolhead, slide the toolhead slightly left, then pull the remaining foam and cardboard out from around it.
  6. Find the three screws Bambu circles in green near the heatbed and tighten them. This step runs backward from what you’d expect: Bambu loosens these three screws at the factory so the heatbed isn’t stressed in transit. Unboxing means tightening them, not loosening them.

With the locks cleared, slide the purge wiper into its slot at the back of the X-axis and secure it with the included screw, bolt on the spool holder base plate and slide the holder in from the top, connect the 580 mm PTFE tube between the toolhead inlet and the filament guide, and clip on the cable organizer.

Power on and follow the on-screen prompts, which walk through initialization and calibration on their own. Wi-Fi setup happens in that same flow: choose Select Wi-Fi on the network screen, pick your network, and enter the password. To bind the printer to Bambu Handy, open the app, sign in, and scan the QR code the printer displays. A1 series printers can also take a PIN code through Bambu Studio if you’d rather bind it that way. Skip networking or Handy binding now, both are still reachable afterward from settings.

Once bound, check for a firmware update before your first real print, either from the printer’s own menu or through Handy. Bambu pushes these updates periodically to patch calibration and feed behavior, and the printer flags an available one itself once it’s online, but it’s worth checking rather than waiting on the pop-up.

The A1 mini is an open-frame printer with no enclosure. Bambu’s own filament guidance rules out ABS, ASA, PC, PA and PET on this machine, materials that need higher bed and chamber temperatures than it can hold, and Bambu doesn’t recommend enclosing it as a workaround either. Stick to PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA. Give it a stable, well-ventilated spot away from strong drafts, and watch the first heat-up and calibration pass instead of walking away: the bed and toolhead move through their full range and the nozzle reaches full temperature during that first cycle.

Next to the standard A1, the mini is smaller on every measurement that matters for placement: a 180 x 180 x 180 mm build volume against the A1’s 256 x 256 x 256 mm, a 347 x 315 x 365 mm footprint against 385 x 410 x 430 mm, and about 5.5 kg against 8.3 kg. One spec worth knowing going in: the A1 mini ships with a low frame rate monitoring camera for remote live view and timelapse, standard equipment on both the mini and the full-size A1. That’s not the AI detection camera used on Bambu’s enclosed machines, so it doesn’t run first-layer inspection or spaghetti detection: the mini has neither the lidar nor the higher-grade sensor those checks need. It’s a live view and timelapse camera only, worth knowing if you plan to check on prints remotely.
